HOW METFORMIN WORKS
Turns down the liver's glucose output.
Metformin works mainly in the liver, where it reduces gluconeogenesis — the production of new glucose. It also improves peripheral insulin sensitivity, meaning muscle and fat tissue take up glucose more readily at a given insulin level. It does not stimulate insulin release, which is why it does not cause low blood sugar on its own.
Reduces glucose production
Less glucose released by the liver means lower fasting blood sugar, the measurement that typically rises first in insulin resistance.
Improves insulin sensitivity
Tissues respond more efficiently to the insulin already circulating, lowering the amount the pancreas needs to produce.
Does not cause hypoglycemia alone
Because metformin does not force insulin release, used by itself it does not typically drive blood sugar below normal.
