HOW GLP-1 RECEPTOR AGONISTS WORK
Glucose control.
Semaglutide is a GLP-1 receptor agonist that mimics a hormone the gut produces after eating. GLP-1 receptors are located in the brain, gut, and pancreas, where activation is associated with appetite regulation, insulin response, and the rate at which the stomach empties.
The gut's own GLP-1 lasts one to two minutes. Receptor agonists are engineered to activate the same receptors for days, producing sustained rather than momentary signaling.
GLP-1 receptors in the brain are involved in suppressing hunger signals and amplifying fullness signals after eating.
Food leaves the stomach more slowly, which extends the sensation of fullness after a meal and moderates the post-meal glucose rise.
Dosing starts low and increases on a schedule. This is how gastrointestinal side effects are managed, and it is why the plan is structured across months.
