HOW PROGESTERONE WORKS

Progesterone is the hormone produced after ovulation in a natural cycle. Its main role in hormone therapy is to oppose estrogen's stimulating effect on the uterine lining. Its metabolites also act on GABA receptors in the brain, which is why it is taken at night.

Progesterone limits the endometrial proliferation that estrogen drives, which is why it is required for anyone with an intact uterus on systemic estrogen.
